Introduction to Cancer

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled and abnormal growth of cells in the body. Normally, body cells grow, divide, and die in a regulated way — but in cancer, this process is disturbed, and abnormal cells continue to multiply without control, sometimes spreading to other organs through the blood or lymphatic system (a process called metastasis).

Definition of Cancer

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is a large group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, invade nearby tissues, and/or spread to other organs.

Causes and Risk Factors of Cancer

  • Smoking and tobacco use – a leading cause of lung and oral cancer
  • Alcohol consumption – increases risk of mouth, throat, liver, and breast cancer
  • Unhealthy diet – low fruit/vegetable intake with high processed food
  • Genetic factors – family history of cancer
  • Environmental pollution – exposure to industrial chemicals
  • Radiation exposure – UV rays and ionizing radiation

Common Types of Cancer

  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Cervical cancer
